CAUSES OF DROPOUT AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS IN EBONYI STATE

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate and find out the causes pupils’ in primary schools in Ebonyi state. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 250 male and 250 female teachers were randomly selected for the study from the four local educational zones of the local government area. Data collected were analyzed using weighted mean and standard deviation to answer the two research questions and T-test to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the respondents show that the 12 items in the part one and 7 items in the part two of the questionnaire were the socio-economic and school-based factors respectively were the causes of pupils drop out in primary schools in Ebonyi state. In the light of the findings of this study the following recommendations were made that education authorities should train, motivate and encourage teachers on the modern and most effective methods of teaching and the best approach to make the pupils regain interest in their studies; governments at all level should embrace educational reforms which would ensure the provision of adequate infrastructure, teaching and learning resources and other enabling environment in the schools to encourage pupils to be in school; and every school should be made to have well equipped and functional guidance and counselling unit to carter for both career and emotional needs of pupils. This will ensure that the pupils are properly monitored and guided both academically and emotionally.
